A Millenial's Truth

A Millenial's Truth

I recently attended a slam poetry session at a local coffee house. I enjoy slam poetry since it can convey a very brutal honesty in someone's life. This session was no different. Many talented poets came up and shared their work, and I was honored to be in the presence of people that have a talent that I could only wish to possess.

Anyway, there was one young poet who caught my attention. His name is Diego Alberto Martinez. A young man in his early teenage years. I have to admit my own age bias prevented me from hearing his first words, but the more I listened, I was struck by the amount of clarity and insight this man had regarding his own generation's responsibility of finding solutions and answers to today's problems. It took me back to the time when I was his age, and within the smell of teen spirit, I remember not having the same amount of conviction about trying to solve our problems as this young man had.

One thing that caught my attention specifically was Diego's portrayal of South America, and how different it was to the way it is portrayed in popular media. I am thankful that he provided another way of looking at how our brothers and sisters in different parts of the world are fighting to be heard, and how complicated that can be.

Here is an excerpt from Diego's poem. The first line in the clip is my favorite.
